Mokhtar Alkhanshali grew up in San Francisco’s Tenderloin, but his parents are from the mountain town of Ibb, Yemen. The Port of Mokha on the Red Sea is the birthplace of the coffee trade due to the region’s sweet, chocolatey beans; it is the inspiration for the word “mocha”.
Mokhtar learned that his home country’s coffee farmers had started growing products for the more profitable drug trade, and his dream was to re-establish the global foothold of Yemen coffee. He spent three years visiting the old coffee farms of his mother country, including many that could only be reached by foot. He offered farmers microloans and an education on the agricultural, environmental, and financial benefits of organic coffee farming. His efforts were the beginning of a new way of life for the farmers of Yemen, and some extraordinary coffee for the world to enjoy.
We were so taken with Mokhtar’s journey, business practices, and the sweet, chocolatey notes of his unique coffee that, after meeting him in our Valencia Street café, we knew we had to work together. We are the only ones in the world to pair these unique, smooth, mellow coffee beans with our single-origin, small-batch chocolate. You may have tasted chocolate-covered coffee beans before and found them burnt and bitter. These are, by far, brighter, sweeter, and more complex than anything else we’ve ever tasted.

Shawn Williams, owner of Feve and a long-time friend, coated Port of Mokha’s espresso beans with our Camino Verde chocolate. Shawn has a natural talent for hand-crafted chocolates. We always turn to him for special collaborations.
